Today is the 53rd anniversary of "the day the music died." A plane carrying Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens crashed in Iowa breaking the hearts of countless teenagers and changing the course of rock & roll history forever.

From the distance created by time, we can discover the heritage of that extraordinary era is more than just the million-sellers everyone remembers. Yet we realize the spirit of the old music, brash and yet innocent in the same breath, was a symbol of an era waiting to bust loose from their constraints.

Inside you will find a medley; not just any medley but a 34-minute non-stop reminder of what was and a hint of what might have been.

BIZARRE ... AND HARD TO IGNORE

THE BUDDY HOLLY CURSE

"The Curse" started with Holly's death and continues to this very day. It seems the music didn't actually die on February 3, 1959. It couldn't have because so many people connected in even the smallest way with Buddy Holly � musicians, producers and screenwriters � continued to pass away, some of them in the most bizarre and tragic fashion.

"THAT'LL BE THE DAY WHEN I DIE"

The Winter Dance Party was a tour designed to cover 24 Midwestern cities in three weeks. A logistical nightmare from the start was the amount of travel, as the distance between venues was not a priority when scheduling each performance. For example, the tour would start at venue A, travel two hundred miles to venue B, and travel back one hundred seventy miles to venue C, which was only thirty miles from venue A.

The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa was never intended to be a stop on the tour, but promoters, hoping to fill an open date, called the manager of the ballroom and offered him the show. He accepted and the date of the show was set for February 2.

We dropped The Beatles Smile on December 31, never expecting to bring the daily segment back. We thought the regular Daily Smile and The Back Then songs would be enough to put a grin on your face each and every day.

Man, were we wrong!

It left a lot to be desired from a musical perspective � and that's being kind. Too many examples of singers too far from microphones and several misplaced guitar notes. They only played five songs � seven if you include snippets of Danny Boy and God Save The Queen.

But none of that matters because what was significant about the Rooftop Concert was it was the last public performance of The Beatles. So no, it was not a thing of beauty yet because of its historical importance, it remains a compelling event.

LEGENDARY BASSIST DIES AT 74

Dick Kniss (1937-2012)

Dick Kniss, bassist for famed folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary for over four decades and the co-writer of John Denver's Sunshine On My Shoulders, passed away on January 25. He was 74.
