 Rays Rants: LAUGHABLE INCOMPETENCE

StreamingOldiesMusic

So Are We
Subtitled 'Sometimes Surveys Really Suck'

Greatest lists of anything are always sure to spark controversy since they are so subjective but a new list from VH1 is guaranteed to make sparks fly, or as shown above, make people laugh out loud.

Rays Rants: WHY DID WE EVEN BOTHER?

StreamingOldiesMusic

Well, This Was Embarrassing

We put a lot of time and thought into our This Week In Rock & Roll History column every week. Well, we do NOW but looking back at the very first history column, published exactly five years ago today, it looks like we must have spent a whole five minutes putting it together.

Take a peek inside. It won't take long to absorb all the "information". Meanwhile, we'll be wiping the egg off our face.

Rays Rants: BRAGGING ABOUT A GRANDSON

StreamingOldiesMusic

Do You Remember This Kid?
Well, He's All Grown Up ... And He Can Sing!!

Two years ago I asked your indulgence while I publicly wished my grandson a happy 16th birthday. He was then and remains today one of the coolest individuals on the planet. He has the normal interests any high school senior about to turn 18 has; a girl he is crazy about, anything related to computers ... and music.

But he doesn't just listen to music. He sings it and if a grandfather can be allowed to brag, he sings it well!

Rays Rants: GREAT MUSIC COMES IN ALL AGE GROUPS

StreamingOldiesMusic

Good music isn't limited by the age of the performer. You didn't have to physically grow up in the sixties to be able to sing songs from that era. For example, a group of talented Regis High School students recently held a 60's #1 Hits Concert in New York City. They entertained their audience with timeless hits from yesteryear, including Happy Together, Monday Monday, Daydream Believer and more.

I could have selected any one of several performances to spotlight but in full disclosure, the song on the inside is sung by my great-nephew, Steven Ruse (by virtue of being the son of my nephew Steve who is really a great nephew) and I refuse to let the fear of nepotism stand in the way. The kid has talent even if I do say so myself ... and I do.

Rays Rants: THE CENSUS IS GETTING PERSONAL

Streaming Oldies

YOU MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO

Without any apparent authority the Census Bureau has expanded its information gathering activities. It has no Constitutional authority for that, in fact the Bureau is violating the 4th Amendment to the Bill of Rights by suggesting that Americans are "obligated" to provide any personal information whatsoever to government.

The video inside itemizes the fundamental legal questions that the Census Bureau refuses or fails to answer about its collection and use of personal information from every American.

Rays Rants: NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY THE COVER

StreamingOldiesMusic

Many people became aware of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole when they heard him singing while the credits rolled at the end of the film Meet Joe Black. That is not how I discovered him. My first experience with his music came from listening to one of his songs on Shabby & Blue's radio program, heard every Tuesday night on Streamingoldies.com. Combining Somewhere Over The Rainbow and What A Wonderful World, "Iz" created a masterpiece.

The moment the song ended, I immediately contacted Shabby and asked for a copy of the song … and since that night, I must have played this tune a hundred times. Shab may not realize it but when he played the song again the other night and dedicated it to me, he could not have honored me more.

Rays Rants: THANKS FOR REMINDING ME

Streaming Oldies

You will never know how close I came to not writing this article. To be more precise, you will never know how very close I came to never posting another article.

Only two other people were aware of my intent to finally wave the white flag of surrender and turn off the lights after writing a farewell article at the end of 2009. Heather told me I should do what felt right for me although she added her opinion that a lot of people derive a lot of pleasure from Streamingoldies. The Kid also sympathized with my decision but he too thought it was sad to see this site disappear after all the work put into it.

Now I highly value the opinions of those two people but I still questioned the wisdom of continuing. Hey, I'm not naïve; I know there are plenty of music web sites people can turn to. Did mine really make a difference?

And then, over the course of a few weeks in December, I found the answer.

Rays Rants: 30 YEARS OF FEAR AND LOATHING

StreamingOldiesMusic

In the fifties, sixties and seventies, teenagers may not have had advisory labels slapped on their favorite music, but we had something else to contend with; local, state and federal commissions who applied their narrow-minded approach to music with ridiculous edicts on what was acceptable for teenagers.

Today's youth may have to convince their parents the lyrics on a certain CD "really aren't that bad," but the teenagers of yesteryear, and in fact, the musicians of those days gone by, had it worse. Back then, the government not only decided what could be played, in many cases, they even decided what could be recorded.

Let's take a short journey back to the "good old days" when innocence wasn't so much a way of life because we wanted it that way, but rather, because someone told us it should be.

 Rays Rants: LASTING FIRST IMPRESSIONS

StreamingOldiesMusic

You can't judge a book by the cover but when you're in the market for music, the cover often helps to make your decision easier. For example, there was something compelling about the baby reaching for the dangling buck on Nirvana's iconic album cover for Nevermind. Lead singer Kurt Cobain liked the title because it was a metaphor for his attitude on life and because it was grammatically incorrect. He liked the photo because it represented the fact humans start chasing the almighty dollar from birth.

In any event, the album cover caught on in a big way. It's safe to say it was the music that drove sales of the album beyond the 10-million copy mark but the cover surely helped. Nevermind is just one example of a cover that caught the public's eye. There are some so memorable they are forever etched in our mind.

But... there have also been plenty of album covers you can never forget for all the wrong reasons. In those instances, you could judge the album by the cover, and if sales were any indication, the verdict was usually "guilty of extremely bad taste."
