Rays Rants: THE MOST POWERFUL VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN

Look Inside And See Why

Paul McCartney has delivered an anti-turkey holiday message, telling people to go vegetarian. If you've heard the spiel before, you might be thinking he should keep his personal preference to himself and you'll go right on eating what you want.

I used to feel that way but the video inside changed my mind forever. If you have the guts to watch, it will change yours.

 Rays Rants: DREADFUL ALBUM COVERS

StreamingOldiesMusic

You can't judge a book by the cover but when you're in the market for music, the cover often helps to make your decision easier. For example, there was something compelling about the baby reaching for the dangling dollar on Nirvana's iconic album cover for Nevermind. Lead singer Kurt Cobain liked the title because it was a metaphor for his attitude on life and because it was grammatically incorrect. He liked the photo because it represented the fact humans start chasing the almighty dollar from birth.

In any event, the album cover caught on in a big way. It's safe to say it was the music that drove sales of the album beyond the 10-million copy mark but the cover surely helped. Nevermind is just one example of a cover that caught the public's eye. There are some so memorable they are forever etched in our mind.

But... there have also been plenty of album covers you can never forget for all the wrong reasons. In those instances, you could judge the album by the cover, and if sales were any indication, the verdict was usually "guilty of extremely bad taste."

Another Reason Why I Won't Watch

I'll be frank. I have never watched American Idol. That's not a putdown of the performers. I'm sure they're all wonderful but I prefer to listen to artists who earned their chops the hard way; playing in seedy bars, spending countless hours on the road ... basically busting their ass to make it.

But I digress. The program just gave me another reason to skip over it.

Rays Rants: PLAYING THE LOST SONGS

StreamingOldiesMusic

Something Old Is Something New

It's no surprise. What we do here is play oldies, write about oldies, ask survey questions about oldies, etc. But those oldies were all hit songs; music you remember and love.

What about the songs that never made it? What about the tunes that slipped through the cracks? Surely there must be a place for them.

There is. Look inside.

Those who cannot remember the past
Are condemned to repeat it

George Santayana

"You know, you see these bums, you know, blowin' up the campuses. Listen, the boys that are on the college campuses today are the luckiest people in the world, going to the greatest universities, and here they are, burnin' up the books, I mean, stormin' around about this issue, I mean, you name it - get rid of the war, there'll be another one."
Richard Nixon, New York Times, May 2, 1970

People may wonder if I have grown tired of posting this article every year on this date. The simple answer is this … I can't ignore it and neither should you. It was and remains one of our nation's darkest days, so no, I am no more tired of posting it than those four young students are tired of resting in their graves.
